Black: From Taboo to Trend !

Black  represent darkness, it symbolises death & mourning, an end, it’s mystique…There has been a wide range of associations to the color.

Black one of the earliest colors used by artists in history for paintings- black charcoal and iron minerals used in cave paintings, in Medieval paintings the devil as having human form but with wings was often painted in black. Also the first ink used in printing, art and literature ; most commonly used color in clay pottery.

It was in 14th century, government officials, bankers began wearing black clothes as a sign of importance (arrival of high-quality black dyes and the implementation of laws restricting colored cloth to nobility) and soon it was embraced by businessmen & statesmen.

During 1920, women’s fashion was revolutionised by the French designer ‘Coco Chanel’, who popularised black dress(LBD: Little Black Dress) before her introduction of color as staple in wardrobe, black was seen as a colour of mourning and reserved for funerals. She famously said, “A woman needs just three things; a black dress, a black sweater, and, on her arm, a man she loves”. Soon the trend of black color in women’s wardrobe was raging with other designers like Gianni Versace & Yves Saint Laurent contributing to it. One of the most iconic black dresses of the century was worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the style statement was well received by women all over.

By the 20th century it was a dominant fashion color which was widely used and appreciated and still continues to rule. Black clothing has an undeniable power, it commands attention. It connotes seriousness, also rebellious streak …making it a popular choice. BLACK IS POETIC!!!

Among the endless variety of colors and combinations that fashion retailers stock, black is a perennially popular choice. In a recent analysis of more than 183,000 dresses retailing online in the US, retail technology firm Edited found that about 38.5% were some shade of black, making it by far the most common color available. Only about 10.7% of dresses came in the second-most popular shade, white.

A few quotes on color black , as most popular fashion choice-

  • “You can wear black at anytime. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion”.  -Christian Dior
  • “There’s something about black. You feel hidden away in it”.   -Georgia O’ Keeffe
  • “I’ll stop wearing black when they invent a darker color.”   -Wednesdays Addams

Shining Soul

Ever wondered how someone whom me meet like at office, gym, or say college is brimming with happiness and oozes positivity all around. The way they find joy in little details of life which we might just overlook, they are ready for impromptu plans and always full of creative ideas- say good at surprises both (receiving and giving), open to experiment, they don’t shy away from seeking pleasure in something which we hesitate to try as we are conscious and simply hold back.

I mean all of us face difficulties, go through innumerable failed attempts at trying something, run late as per schedule, have awkward moments yet you see that one person or say a few of them who don’t let such issues diminish their zeal for life, their smile or laugh for that moment. Everybody wants to be around them and enjoy such company. But, why wait for some other person to keep your life- ALIVE, why not be our own source of happiness- it’s just a matter of choice; the perspective like when things are falling apart maybe they are actually falling at the right place….

Be that shining soul everyone looks up to, it’s all about the right attitude & it can be acquired. Value your life and count your blessings….You’ve got one life; live it! You can’t have full control over life and things will not always happen as per your plan but choose to be happy, we flourish in life when we learn to forgive and forgo the flaws & failures and move ahead with time. Instead of brooding over petty things learn to bloom !!!

“Life is not about how fast you run or how high you climb but how well you bounce”  -Vivian Komori

A Loyal Friend

Loyalty is very important for stability of any bond and when you find a friend that qualifies this virtue of being true to you, your life is so much sorted. We all long for a friend who we can always turn up to as our support; bond of friendship is about being respectful and accepting towards each others weakness or flaws, after all we are all ‘perfectly imperfect’- isn’t it !

My Everything Friend

You magnify my happiness
When I am feeling glad;
You help to heal my injured heart
Whenever I am sad.

You’re such a pleasure in my life;
I hope that you can see
How meaningful your friendship is;
You’re a total joy to me.

A friend is our confidante, an assurance that we have someone to guard us emotionally, at times- only presence of a friend is enough to make us feel secure in any adverse situation we face.

Loyalty in friendship cements the relationship making it stronger as it grows with time. That’s how you win over a friend and earn respect. You never dread the feeling of being alone as you have someone to pour your heart out, discuss your inhibitions/ fears, seek opinions without fear of judgement. Basically being faithful ….

When you are willing to invest your true feeling of care, attention, love for your friend you earn it back as well. When you devote your time it means a lot and shows your concern for the other person- it forms real bonds, that’s the best & biggest reward that you get. We all want to have someone who will be there for us when we need them the most.  In the long-term, a loyal friendship will yield you happy harvest as it’s an implicit promise that  you are worth keeping around. A loyal friend nurtures you as a person- source of positivism in your life, is kind & compassionate- overlooks minor issues that might erupt, no room for pretension- you can be yourself!

“The strong bond of friendship is not always a balanced equation; friendship is not always about giving and taking in equal shares. Instead, friendship is grounded in a feeling that you know exactly who will be there for you when you need something, no matter what or when.”   -Simon Sinek

KUDOS…. to all our crazy friends & all the wonderful memories of friendship 😉

Self Worth

How a person values himself & assess his worth as a human being. Knowing who you are, it’s more of an opinion or judgement that you have for self, qualities that make you- ‘YOU. It is very important to build self worth and it should not be affected by factors like comparing yourself with others, remember everyone is unique. We should strive to be better version of ourselves but evaluating self-worth based on factors like what qualities others possess and is dormant/absent in you is meaningless.

While you try to acknowledge your self worth, learn to be easy to self. Exercise the flexibility that you would while judging a loved one- be loving and accepting towards yourself.

A good way to boost you self worth is involve/engage yourself  in activities that you feel good about and pursue those activities to build a more positive feeling of self-worth. Never underestimate yourself and don’t fall prey to the standards we set as ‘cool’, ‘in trend’ & so on. Embrace your individuality and accept that it’s OK even if we don’t fit into the circle and stand out. How you feel about yourself greatly impacts different aspects of your life- ADMIRE YOURSELF.  It is a sad reality but most of us tend to accept/ stick to a relation which we are not sure about, job or any other issue primarily because we underestimate our worth and resist from striving for better . We all have negative thoughts sometimes but don’t let that define your actions. Have a positive outlook, remember what you want in the end. Work upon yourself: no matter how small a step, gradually you’ll  feel the difference. Get a grip on your life- ‘Develop attitude of gratitude‘.

Do not set a limit for yourself, avoid such barrier of doubts. Don’t let other people take control of your life, just don’t be afraid to voice your opinion &  stand up for yourself. Reinforce this thought time & again –Love yourself & Take pride of who you are also stay  humble. It is only & only you who define’s your worth….

You are worth way more than what you actually think. Work hard and be unstoppable, seek opportunities and that’s how you gonna add feather to your hat. RISE & SHINE!!!

Self-worth is the foundation to happiness & success 🙂

“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”  – Lucille Ball

“Self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.”  – Parker Palmer

Aaloo Palak Gosht: Get Set Nosh!

Hi All,

Sharing yet another recipe that is easy to cook and a yummy treat. This mutton preparation is super quick and comes along with goodness of spinach (Popeye’s favourite energy packed ingredient) and potato (don’t we all like it so much, it surely needs no reason to justify its intake)- a wholesome meal….

  • Spinach is an excellent source of vitamin K (important source for maintaining bone health), vitamin A, vitamin C and folate as well as being a good source of manganese, magnesium (helps lower high blood pressure levels), iron and vitamin B2.
  • Potatoes are a storehouse of energy and nutrition, including vitamins, minerals, and essential organic compounds and are primarily made of carbohydrates.

Lets get started!

  1. Mutton -500 grams (boneless)
  2. Spinach- 200 grams (roughly chopped)
  3. Potato -3 Medium (cut into 4 pieces each)
  4. Onion -1 Large (finely chopped)
  5. Ginger & Garlic paste 2 tbsp
  6. Green Chilli – 4 to 5 (roughly chopped)
  7. Bay Leaf -2
  8. Other Whole Spices (Black Pepper: 10-12, Cinnamon Stick: about an inch, Black Cardamon: 2 & Cloves: 4-5)
  9. Coriander Powder -3 tsp
  10. Turmeric Powder -1/2 tsp
  11. All Spice Powder(garam masala) -1 tsp
  12. Red Chilli Powder- 2 tsp
  13. Salt to Taste
  14. Cooking Oil -3 tbsp
  15. Lemon juice -1 tsp

  1. In a pressure cooker; add Mutton, chopped onion, ginger & garlic paste, cooking oil, bay leaf, all whole spices, all powdered spices (turmeric, coriander, garam masala & red chilli) & salt (add a little amount initially as spinach is salty itself which will be added later). Now mix all ingredients well and set it on medium-high flame.
  2. Let it all cook until 2 whistles and then lower flame and cook further for 8-10 minutes, let the pressure release and check for tenderness of meat.
  3. Now at this stage, add a little water & stir. Add potatoes,spinach and green chillies and set on medium flame until a whistle.
  4. Once again as the pressure releases, add salt accordingly for taste if required and squeeze lemon juice.

Rain ⛈🌦

Seasonal cycle has its own phases & uniqueness to it but after a prolonged experience of summer, perfect time for swimming, skating and sun-bathing with tans to remind its mark. Here in London, Summer is ideal for being by a beach or lake. Also you get to see a lot of sizzling-smoky barbecue happening around in neighbourhood as it is a lot more fun activity with family and friends since it’s summer vacation. In short, ‘Breed & Feed’ phase.

But, the first shower is the most awaited thing and a sigh of relief and yesterday marked the arrival of the same. It rained  quite heavily most of the evening…

I will say – ‘Rain has its own way of soothing a soul from being a visual treat with all things lush green,  rhythmic sound of the pearl like raindrops that is similar to a tap dance and smell of rain (Petrichor) like a perfect scent in air.’

It surely is a treat to one’s senses!!!

Wohoo! From paperboats to a cup of tea & snacks with some good music or read, monsoon surely knows how to engage one and all irrespective of age bar.

Welcome Rain !!!

Here’s sharing a wonderful poem with you all by William Henry Davies-

The Rain

I hear leaves drinking rain;

I hear rich leaves on top

Giving the poor beneath

Drop after drop;

‘Tis a sweet noise to hear

these green leaves drinking near.

And when the sun comes out,

After this rain shall stop,

A wondorous light shall fill

Each dark, round drop;

I hope the sun shines bright;

‘Twill be a lovely sight.

To be guided amidst the darkness and lead towards a clear view, it is the oil in the lamp that plays a vital role. The most crucial factor that keeps it incandescent irrespective of all the other adornments the lamp can possess like the fancy shapes/moulds, the vibrant colors it is crafted in. Similarly, confidence (belief in one’s ability) is the essential element to help achieve success or to accomplish any task in life.

It is about knowing your self-worth. You need to be aware & secure of your qualities. If you are certain, you can surely convince others about it. Confidence runs deep and works it way out without armors we associate it with like appearance & other fancy things to cover ourselves in, just like the description of the lamp mentioned above….

Never undermine the importance of confidence!!!

Stand up for yourself and seize the moment 🙂
